Chapter 11
âWhere is she?â Doug demanded, keeping his voice low. He scanned the crowd, but still didnât see Hannah among the gathered necromancers.
âAre you yelling at me?â Declan asked, his voice equally low.
âNo, Iâm venting. Youâre handy.â
âPerhaps I should go stand over there.â He nodded to the far side of the patio, well away from the veranda where they currently stood.
Doug followed his nod, his gaze snagging on the empty pool. The pool hadnât been used since he, Era, and Jake had swum almost a week ago. Apparently, poor Jake must have bragged it up too much with his mother, and she hadnât allowed him to returnâthough she had suggested she would bring him to swim. However, her quest to find the perfect spa here in the Cincinnati area had taken precedence. And since Jakeâs nanny had moved in, Hannah no longer had to look after Jake.
âMy guess is that sheâs intentionally late in order to make her entrance visible to those who werenât so tastefully tardy,â Declan offered.
Doug sighed, forcing himself not to tug at his collar. He had requested this eveningâs gathering to be summer casual, but to the necromancer crowd, that just meant no tuxedos or evening gowns. He, like every other man present, wore a suit, but the sun was dipping below the western horizon and taking the heat with it. Normally, a function like this would be held indoors, but with the renovations, heâd moved it outside. If there wasnât so much tradition involved in naming an heir, he would have rented a more suitable venue.
âI havenât thanked you for doing this,â Declanâs voice was so soft that Doug almost didnât catch the words.
âThis?â
âKissing Hannahâs ass, and going so far as to name Jake heir.â
Doug glanced over. Declan kept surprising him, but then maybe Cora was right, how well did he really know his brother? With a five-year age difference, the bulk of their childhood interactions had been Doug following Declan around like a lost pupâmuch to Declanâs annoyance. And once they were old enough to truly get to know each other, Declan had married and moved away.
âJust do me a favor,â Declan continued. âHurry up and have children of your own. If Jake is too old when you name a new heirâwell, that never seems to go so well.â
âUnless something unforeseen happens, I have no intention of revoking my choice.â
Declan turned to stare at him.
âYes, Iâm doing this now to get Jake back in our lives, but Iâm choosing him based on his own meritâor potential. I really think heâs going to be an amazing talent.â
Declan still looked like he didnât know what to say, but a commotion near the patio doors drew their attention. Hannah and Jake had arrived.
âLooks like Iâm on,â Declan muttered. âWish me luck.â
Doug wanted to point out that he wasnât married to her anymore, but like Doug, he had to continue to kiss her assâif this was going to work.
âGood luck,â Doug answered, watching Hannah smile and greet those closest to her.
